Le Ballet national néerlandais a été formé en 1961 lorsque le Ballet d'Amsterdam et le Ballet néerlandais ont fusionné. La société a été dirigée par Sonia Gaskell (1961-1969), Rudi van Dantzig (1969-1991), Wayne Eagling (1991-19 2003) et est actuellement dirigée par Ted Brandsen. Il attire de nombreux artistes internationaux.

La compagnie est basée au Dutch National Opera & Ballet (anciennement connu sous le nom de Het Muziektheater) à Amsterdam depuis 1986.
